[had + past participle]

The Past Perfect is used to express:

1.  the idea that one action in the past happened before another action in the past.
   • When I got home, I found that someone had broken into my apartment and had stolen the DVD player.

   • I didn’t want to go  to the cinema because I had seen the movie before.
